For your consideration is a collection of three books by James Willard Schultz. J. W. Schultz (1859–1947), or "Apikuni", was an author, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader, and historian known for his historical writings of the Blackfoot Indians in the late 1800s, when he lived among them as a fur trader. He operated a fur trading post at Carroll, Montana and lived among the Pikuni tribe during the period 1880-82. He was given the name Apikuni by the Pikuni chief, Running Crane. Apikuni in Blackfeet means "Spotted Robe." In 1907, Schultz published "My Life as an Indian", the first of many future writings about the Blackfeet that he would produce over the next thirty years. Schultz lived in Browning, Montana. The first book is a Rare, 1913 First Edition of "Sinopah-The Indian Boy", publisher Houghton Mifflin Company, The Riverside Press. There are numerous illustrations throughout the book by E. Boyd Smith. "Sinopah-The Indian Boy" is a story of a Blackfoot Indian boy, who Schultz knew later in life as a friend and a great chief. A interesting tale of what life was like for Blackfoot children before the reserves, how they practiced and were trained to become hunters and warriors up to the point where he joined his first society, the Mosquitos, where formal training began. As a boy and young man, Schultz lived with the Blackfoot Indians on the upper Missouri in the days before the white man had penetrated the far West, and his writings about the Indians are based upon an intimate knowledge of their native life. The second book is a First Edition of "Plumed Snake Medicine", 1924, illustrated by George Varian. a quest by young Blackfeet (Pikuni) men to find the powerful feathered Plumed Serpent god to restore the vanished buffalo herds, encountering different tribes and challenges along the way. The last book is a First Edition of "A Son of the Navajos", 1927, with illustrations by Rodney Thompson. The book chronicles the story of two orphaned Navajo boys, adopted and raised by the Tewa tribe, exploring themes of identity and belonging as they navigate hostility from some pueblo dwellers and their own heritage, offering insights into Southwestern Native American life for young readers. Schultz wrote this story primarily during the time he spent in his remote hunting cabin in the White Mountains of Arizona during the 1920s. The clothbound stamped and illustrated hardcovers are in good overall condition with tight bindings, scuffing exhibited on covers and edges. Intact pages have age tanning and slight foxing throughout. Respective measurements are 5.5"W x 8.12.5"L x .75"D, 5.25"W x 7.7.5"L x 1.25"D, and 5.25"W 7.5"L x 1.25"D. Combined weight is 2lb, 12oz.
