Presented in this lot is a large Japanese Arita-Yaki Imari Ware Charger plate, circa Meiji period, porcelain mark/seal on reverse. Porcelain was produced in Arita for the first time in 1616 under the control by the feudal lord of Nabeshima, or the present Saga Prefecture. Arita ware is also called Imari ware because the products of the Arita kiln were mainly shipped from a nearby port of Imari. Arita porcelains of the early days were typically made in the Chinese style of the period, with deep-blue patterns on a white background, called sometsuke ("blue-and-white"). In the 1640s, a new style called aka-e" was invented, characterized by bright colours and bold patterns principally in red. These two styles, "sometsuke" and "aka-e," dominate Japanese "Arita/Imari" wares. This Arita ware charger displays the typical blue underglaze with red, green and gold gilt colours overglaze. The centre shows concentric flowers, the flanks feature three separate panels of a lake view with homes adjacent to tree-lined hillsides separated by panels of a flower set against a cross-hatched blue gold gilt background. Charger plate is in nice condition, some gilt is faded, no other obvious marring observed. Measures 14.75" diameter, 9" diameter base foot, weight 4lb, 6oz approximately.
