For your consideration is a Murata type 18 11mm Japanese bolt action military rifle. The Murata rifle was designed by Major Murata Tsuneyoshi and was the first locally produced Japanese service rifle. It was adopted in 1880 as the Meiji Type 13 Murata single-shot rifle. This was Japan's initial breech loading rifle completely designed and manufactured since opening it' borders to the Western World. Superficial improvements such as components, bayonet lugs, and minor configurations led to the redesignation of the Type 13 to the Type 18 rifle in 1885. The 18 referred to the adoption date, the year 18 (1885) in the Meiji period according to the Japanese calendar. This rifle features a 33 ½” barrel chambered in 11x60mm Mauser. The firearm is fit with a custom sporterized stock with dark hard wood and ivory inlay. The barrel retains the forward sling attachment and front sight. The Kanji on the octagonal portion of the barrel has a white painted inlay and engraving surrounding it. The Kanji on the left of the receiver is faded and shows a nice dark patina indicative of its early manufacture. The rifle has a straight grip checkered stock with metal butt plate. No Serial Number. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
