An okimono is a decorative standing ornament or figure, often made of wood, ivory, or metal, that is displayed in the tokonoma, a decorative alcove in a traditional Japanese room. Literally translated, "okimono" means "object for display" or "standing object". They are frequently used to represent aspects of Japanese life and mythology. The fish is a sea bream which has symbolic importance in Japan, it is a fish for celebration and eaten at New Year. The Japanese name for sea bream is ‘tai’, which is part of the word ‘medetai’ which means auspicious and joyful. Also seam bream turns bright red when it’s cooked, and red is a lucky colour that is thought to ward off evil.
