Jessica Zemsky (July 26, 1923-October 28, 2024) was an American painter born into a Russian immigrant family in Brooklyn, New York. She was a skilled artist since she was a child, studying at the Pratt Institute (where she graduated with honors) and taking art workshops in New York City. Initially working in illustration and advertising, she and her husband Jack Hines moved to Montana in the early 1970s, where their longtime creative relationship thrived. Jessica became best known for her brilliant gouache, oil, pastel, and watercolor works, particularly portraits of children and poetic scenes of Montana life, which she described as "spontaneous, colorful, and full of life" and noteworthy for their expressive color palette. A founding member of regional arts groups including the Western Rendezvous of Art, the Plein Air Artists of America, and the Pastel Society of America, her work is held in collections across the U.S. and Europe. She passed away at the age of 101 in 2024. This painting shows two young girls sitting in the grass with flowers surrounding them as they look towards the viewer smiling.
