In this lot is an original Joe Herrera (also known as See Ru) painting, a depiction of a horse, the painting is signed See Ru. See Ru was an innovative and successful Native American painter. His father was from Cochiti Pueblo, and his mother—pioneering painter Tonita Vigil Peña (1893-1949) Quah Ah—from San Ildefonso. Though his artistic inheritance and early art education came from his mother, Herrera is rightly considered to be from Cochiti Pueblo and he attended the Santa Fe Indian School.
Excellent painting that reflects Herrera's preference on "cool" colours, sacred symbolism is noted with the vertical and horizontal lines intersecting unseen in the middle of a semi-circle, also segmented by a vertical hash line, the separate regions differentiated by "cool" yellow and blue and "arrows" in each quadrant pointing in west and east directions respectively. The horse is painted in a "cool" blue, consistent with the artistist's fondness for "cooler" colours.
Excellent condition, professionally framed, painted matted wood frame with minimal paint scratches, slight water mark on bottom of matting, frsame measures 9.5"L x 7.5"W, visible art measures 6.25"L x 5.25"W
