For your consideration is this brass and oak six spoke yacht wheel from John Hastie & Co LTD Engineers-Greenock. The steeling wheel shows six spokes and turned oak handles with the majority of the frame and moving parts constructed from brass and is mounted on a oak shield. John Hastie, an engineer and millwright, opened a small works in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland, producing sundry engineering products in 1845. In 1853, he patented the first self-holding steering gear and went on to produce hand-steering gears of the right and left hand screw principle. The condition of this of this John Hastie mounted brass wheel is good with no obvious signs of damage to the wheel or the oak shield it is mounted to. The measurements of this wheel is 18" in diameter, and the stand shows 22 3/4" tall.
