Featured in this lot is this aquatinted etching titled "Assiniboin Indians," by artist Karl Bodmer born 1809 and died 1893, the etching is circa 1839 and shows the blind stamp centered at the bottom of the etching and shows Tab# 32. The etching shows a fierce scene of Assiniboine warriors with the first carrying a large spear with trade cloth draped on it and holding a shield while wearing hide garments and hide robe fastened to his back. The second is in the background holding a rifle and wearing a more ceremonial garments with a hide side robe with a beaded breast plate and shows a village way back in the background with teepee's or tipi's with a group of Native People's entering the frontal teepee. Johann Carl Bodmer was a Swiss-French printmaker, etcher, lithographer, zinc engraver, draughtsman, painter, illustrator and hunter. Known as Karl Bodmer in literature and paintings, as a Swiss and French citizen, his name was recorded as Johann Karl Bodmer and Jean-Charles Bodmer, respectively. The condition of this aquatinted etching is good with no obvious signs of damage to the artwork or the frame and in good overall display condition. The measurements of this framed etching are 32 3/4" x 26 1/2" and the visible art measures 20 1/2" x 14 3/4". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert.
