Featured in this lot is this etching called " Travellers Meeting with Mintarre Indians near Fort Clark," from Karl Bodmer born 1809 and died 1893 and dated from 1843 with a blind stamp underneath the inside of the frame border and is from plate Vig. XXVI. The etching shows three travelers with rifles slung over their shoulders meeting Minatarre Indians with a horse that is painted and the group on Native men stretches off into the distance. Fort Clark can be seen in the on the right hand side in the distance and is manned by more men with rifles. The etching shows a professionally crafted frame with gold coloration and shows red speckling along the rim of the frame. Johann Carl Bodmer was a Swiss-French printmaker, etcher, lithographer, zinc engraver, draughtsman, painter, illustrator and hunter. Known as Karl Bodmer in literature and paintings, as a Swiss and French citizen, his name was recorded as Johann Karl Bodmer and Jean-Charles Bodmer, respectively. The condition of this etching is good with no obvious signs of damage and in good overall display condition. The measurements of this framed etching are 19" x 23" and the visible art measures 9" x 13". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert.
