Featured in this lot is this Knights of Templar belt from the Northern Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite Freemasons circa 1940-50s. The Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction (NMJ) was established in 1813 by the Southern Jurisdiction. In 1815, the Northern Jurisdiction was ratified, and in 1867, it merged with the Cerneau "Supreme Council" in New York to form the current Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. The Supreme Council, Scottish Rite, Northern Jurisdiction oversees the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in fifteen states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and Vermont. The belt shows a leather construction with various metal adornments throughout. The main belt buckle reads, "De Witt Clinton Commandery / 27" and shows the Cross & Corwn, the symbol of the Order of the Temple as found in the York Rite. The "27" on the buckle is to show that the wearer was a 27th Degree Mason (Knight of Jerusalem) of the Northern Jurisdiction. Around the belt are smaller adornments showing a knight in amour with a cross and helmet as his head, along with three metal straps to hold up a sword. The belt shows good condition overall with wear from its age and use over the years. There is a slight tear on the back of the belt in the middle but no other signs of damage are noted. The belt measures 18" L x 1 5/8" W. The longest metal strap measures 21 5/8" L. The belt weighs 1 pound and 2 ounces.
