This is an original John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians feathered headdress with large size and beautiful beadwork and quillwork. The piece was handmade by full blood Lakota Sioux Indian John Young Buck (Born 1944-) in the circa late 1980’s to 1990’s from a mid-Western Native American collection. For reference see the John Young Buck feather headdress sold by our company NAAC in July 2022 for $9,100 and another example sold by us as well in May 2024 for $3,750. The piece exhibits a thick Indian tanned hide large bonnet leather cap which is covered on the front with a large wide brow band covered in classic Sioux geometric glass trade seed beads beadwork with a stepped, tipi like pattern in colors of butterscotch yellow, dark blue, light blue and red. At the outside temples of the front bonnet there are two large 3-inch diameter beaded hide medallions with a six-point star sunburst pattern in colors of light blue, red, dark blue, white and green with red corral beaded fringe coming out to the center tied to ermine fur hides. Framing the entire border of the bonnet cap and integrally running down the entire outside like a trailer or trail are large white to brown / tan golden colored Turkey Feathers with plume feathers attached at each tip end along with horse tail hair strands. The feather ends are tightly wrapped with red quill style / like strands and tied onto the brown hide. The entire front and back of the bonnet hide cap is artfully covered with soft plume feathers to give the look of a breast of a bird, a truly beautiful adornment. At the center shows a rawhide four-point amulet with single Turkey Feather tied with old Venetian Millifieori beads, red wrapping and hand painted with a design along the stem of the feather. John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux Tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is considered to be one of the finest Native American artist of the late 20th Century with this being one of if not the finest contemporary headdresses offered for public sale. The headdress is very well preserved with little to no feather or bead loss, supple hides, striking colors and displays absolutely beautifully. Measures overall 48-inches long by 39-inches wide. The bonnet fits a large men’s head.
