This is a fantastic, large pipe bowl with beautiful pewter lead inlay from the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians of the Northern Plains, dating to circa 1880's. The pipe is hand carved from pipestone catlinite showing a rich dark red coloring with speckling of pink. The pipe stem connection and bowl opening have thick pewter bullet lead poured inlay with three and two bar band inlays. The pipe has a traditional 19th Century "T" pattern showing a flat bottom rounded, tapering back with cylindrical tapering bowl, the end tapers to a diagonal angular cut tip. The stem connection and bowl both have a dark coloring and deep scent from honest age and use. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery. This piece is directly from the collection. The piece shows good overall condition, no visible cracks or major nicks, and expected scraping and wear from use, along with darkening at the bowl and stem and a glossy finish. Measures overall 7 5/8" L by 3 5/8" H by 1 3/8" W. Museum collection number E1084.
