The lot features a brass head pipe tomahawk wrapped in beadwork and buffalo hide with a beaded drop from Lakota Sioux John Young Buck. John Young Buck (1944-) from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is known for his extraordinary artifacts from the 20th-century. The piece exhibits a cast solid brass pipe tomahawk head with molded chevrons, tall thin pipe and incised vine like leaf design. The head is held into place with a gasket of hide on a wood handle with inlaid bands of copper or metal at the top and bottom. The handle is also wrapped in dark blue wool trade clothe with sinew sewing and sections of glass trade seed beadwork along with a wrap of Buffalo hide and tanned hide fringe fringes. There is a tomahawk drop made from dark blue wool trade clothe with muslin backing and Indian hide fringes with a nice section of beadwork done in glass trade seed beads with a Buffalo Track geometric design. The tomahawk measures overall 21-inches long without the drop which is 12-inches by 4-inches. The head by itself is 8.75-inches by 2 7/8-inches.
