Presented in this lot is a vintage Large Blue and White Chinoiserie Mt. Fugi Egg, unknown artist. It has a crisp white background with cobalt blue accents. The scene depicts a couple of fishing boats amidst islands and mountains, two houses visible on different islands, and one solitary robed figure most likely a religious priest, praying in the direction of the tallest mountain that's poking above the clouds. Chinoiserie was once the most coveted fashion of the aristocracy. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Europeans became fascinated with Asian cultures and traditions. They loved to imitate or evoke Asian motifs in Western art, architecture, landscaping, furniture, and fashion. Oftentimes Mt. Fugi is depicted on these types of eggs and as such the eggs are also referred to as Mt. Fugi Eggs. The scene depicted on this Chinoiserie egg is reminiscent of the Japanese Oki islands or the Nansha islands of the South China Sea. The Chinoserie egg is in very fine condition, the muted blue colouring is consistent throughout. no marring noted. Measures 7.5"W x 10.5"H approximately.
