For bidding in this lot is an petrified bison occidentalis skull. The ancient skull was purchased by the consigner from a man who possessed the skull for 70 years - The skull was passed down to the man from his grandfather who owned the skull for an unknown amount of time. The skull is excellently preserved, and shows elongated horns, and bulging eye sockets common of the bison occidentalis. This bison occidentalis was a specie of bison that inhabited North America from 5000 to 10000 years ago. Evidence shows that the Great American Buffalo we know today evolved from the occidentalis around 5000 years ago. Overall, the bison skull shows very-good condition. The skull measures 28 5/8" wide, 22 3/8" from the top of the horn, to the bottom of the jaw, and 8 1/2" deep from the mounting surface.
