This is a nice Plains double blade gunstock war club attributed to the Yanktonai Sioux of South Dakota and believed to be from the 19th-century. This is a unique variation of the gunstock war club showing a long, slender haft with knife blades or spontoon spear blades, often seen from the Sioux and many attributed to the Yanktonai. The club shows two iron knife blades inset into the haft on the nice wood gunstock haft handle with a zig-zag sawtooth cut underside, hoof like pommel end and gunstock like top having an overall curved shape. The club shows hand hewing cuts and carvings. There are various brass tacks on the top and bottom side, at the top in a circle and cross design and a band below the gripping area. While the brass tacks are in the pattern of early examples they appear to be a later addition to the piece. The club has a nice patina and displays well. This appears to be an early antique example, but please examine for your own representation of origin and age. Measures 27-inches in length with the blades protruding 5-inches.
