Featured in this lot is an accurate contemporary of a American Revolutionary War era Steer Horn Powder Horn. The artist's hallmark is noted on reverse side at the top. The carved wood powder horn has the political cartoon inscription, "Join, or Die" along with a snake cut into eight pieces that symbolized the British colonies. Attributed to Benjamin Franklin, the original publication by The Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754, is the earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by an American colonist in Colonial America. With a wooden plug stopper, wooden fittings, a beautiful antique finish, and a leather carrying strap. Turned top plug adorned with small domed brass nails. This powder is beautiful, professionally carved and inscribed, great for display or reenactments. The powder horn is in very fine condition, stained and polished finish. The black leather carrying strap is solid and the stopper is attached with a brown leather thong strap. No obvious marring observed. Measures 16.5"L approximately. This is a later piece reproduced in an old pattern.
