For your consideration is this French title, "Le Tour Du Monde; Nouveau Journal Des Voyages" copyright 1868. First Edition. Popular collection of 19th century travelers, edited by Ed. Charton (1807-1890), French writer and publisher of periodicals. This wonderful review contains 2 articles of North American History Interest. The first one is Haye’s expedition to the arctic. The second one is of great importance for the history of the West and the Indian Wars. It was written by a French scientist, Louis Simonin and was published here for the first time. He describes his overland voyage and adventures .Illustrated with many rare engravings such as the first portrait of Ute chief Ouray (p 248),the Cheyenne delegation with Black Kettle shortly before Sand Creek massacre (p 245), Fort Laramie Council with the Crows (p281). Simonin recorded the speech made by the Crow chief during this council, which has been published by Dee Brown in Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee.This was translated in the USA only 100 years later: The Rocky Mountain West in 1867. By Louis L. Simonin. Translated and annotated by Wilson O. Clough from Le grand-ouest des Etats-Unis.
