Offered in this lot is the Rare First Edition Post-Civil War book, "Life Of General William Tecumseh Sherman" by W. Fletcher Johnson, Edgewood Publishing 1891, with over 30 illustrations and maps. William Tecumseh Sherman was a 19th-century American military officer, known for his outstanding service as a Union Army general during the Civil War. Willis Fletcher Johnson's "Life of General William Tecumseh Sherman" was a late 19th-century biography of Sherman's military career as well as his personal life before and after. A graphic history of his career in war and peace, his romantic youth, his stern and patriotic manhood, his calm and beautiful old age, and a marvelous march from the mountains of time to the sea of eternity. Johnson's description of Sherman's character and his military career shed light on his strategic innovation. Sherman's approach to command and strategy would have him later declared by British historian, B.H. Liddell Hart, as the "first modern general." Johnson portrays Gen. Sherman's military exploits in great detail expertly conveying the exceptional, yet polarizing strategies he employed against the Confederate army while also showcasing the respect his soldiers had for him under his command. Willis Fletcher Johnson (1857-1931), was an author, journalist, and lecturer who had a twenty-year tenure as the foreign and diplomatic editorial writer for the New York Tribune.
