Included in this lot is a first edition "The Lives of Inidan Officers" by John W. Kaye, Copyright 1869. This book comprises biographies of Lord Cornwallis, Sir John Malcolm, Mountstuart Elphinstone, Rev. Henry Martyn, Sir Charles Metcalfe, Sir Alexander Burnes, Captain Arthur Conolly, Major Eldred Pottinger, Major D'Arcy Todd, Sir Henry Lawrence, General Neill, and General John Nicholson. ODNB remarks that Kaye's works "…are still used by historians, and his Sepoy War (1864-76) is still considered a standard work." The book is in fair condition for its age, showing some liquid damage on the cover. The cover shows the original red fine oblique-grain cloth, gilt lettered spine with the title set against a floral patterned guidon and the gilt stamp of the Star of India on the front cover. The book measures 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 1 1/4".
