Featured in this lot is this Makah Pacific Northwest Coast basket pair circa 1940 to 1950's. The basket pair features a wonderfully and professionally crafted woven grass and cedar bark construction that shows a polychrome coloration with layers of coiled design that shows geometric patterns throughout. The smaller is lidded with a loosely fitted lid and the larger is missing its lid but seems to have a frame to be fitted with one. The Makah (or Macah) people are a Native American tribe located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, specifically in the area around Neah Bay on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. They are known for their rich cultural heritage and traditional practices. Traditional Makah basketry involves weaving baskets from materials like cedar bark and spruce roots. These baskets are used for various practical purposes and are often adorned with intricate designs. The condition of these basket's is well preserved with with some loosening to the weave of the smaller basket and the lid missing from the larger but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of these baskets is 4" x 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". The collective weight of these baskets is U6oz.
