The lot features an axe in red paint with old pony trade bead work and tag marked, "Mandan 1833 War Axe of Mandan Chief Mato-Tope 'Four Bears' Hand Forged Blade / Ash Shaft / Karl Bodmer's America- page 309, plate #318 watercolor on paper 1833. Original Axe in Linden-Museum Stuttgart Germany." The axe exhibits a forged iron blade with thick metal with ash wood handle covered in red paint, there is a gripping area wrapped in parfleche rawhide which is also painted red and shows a drop of thick Indian tanned hide drop on the front and bottom of the piece. The beadwork shows a banded chalk white and light greasy yellow design done in all 1800's glass Pony Trade Beads with red painted inside. The tag has a dark brown coloring. Overall measures 23-inches long and the head is 7-inches long and 4-inches long along the blade.
