Offered in this lot is a low serial number Manhattan Firearms Manufacturing Company .36 caliber, five-shot, percussion revolver. The revolver is otherwise known as the Manhattan Navy Type, and rivaled the iconic Colt 1851 Navy - Which some considered the Manhattan to be the superior of the two options. The revolver had strong sales, and was manufactured between 1859 and 1868, in which 78,000 examples were crafted. This revolver shows a low serial # of 17305, indicating that is a "Series III", and was manufactured during the early period of the Civil War. The revolver not only shows a low serial, but it includes the highly desirable "spring plate" factory mounted on the face of the recoil shield - In which very few of this series show this feature (usually below serial number 21,000). The revolver shows sharp markings, reading: "MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK N.J." on the top of the barrel, while the rear of the cylinder is correctly stamped "PATANTED DECEMBER 27, 1859". Additionally, the revolver even shows matching serial numbers (17305) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt, rear face of the cylinder, and even on the original frame wedge - Which are almost always mismatched or replaced. Lastly, the revolver is accented with sharp roll engraved decorative oval panels, showing military and naval scenes. Overall, the revolver retains excellent aesthetic and mechanical condition - The 4" octagon barrel and cylinder show fine aged blue, while the brass trigger guard and grip-strap have a mellow, yet attractive patina, finished off with gorgeous walnut grips, which show only very-light handling marks and retain most of their factory varnish finish. As well, the revolver has very-good mechanical condition, with a very tight action, and even a sharp, bright bore! It is highly unusual to encounter a scarce example, in an unaltered and unmolested state - After the Civil War, most of these revolvers found their way into the Western Frontier, where they typically saw very hard, and sustained use. This historical firearm, in a exceedingly rare variety is worthy of the best of Civil War, and Old West Firearms collections. The revolver qualifies as an Antique Hand Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 17305.
