Featured in this lot is an original, hand-colored "Map of that Part of the Territory of Washington Lying West of the Cascade Mountains" printed by the Lithography Company of A. Hoen & Company of Baltimore in 1857, and created by the Washington State Surveyor General's Office & James Tilton. The map's legend lists surveys that have been completed, contract work that is ongoing, a proposed survey for the years 1857–1858, Indian reservations, prairies, swamps, sawmills, roads, and trails. The surveying of all the new lands was an ongoing project for the Office of the Surveyor General, primarily in preparation for their eventual sale to settlers and secondarily to assess whether they would be useful to the government for military or transportation purposes. The map is professionally framed and single matted with blue colored matting paper and features a gold colored metal frame around the map. The back of the frame features a Certificate of Authentication and information on the piece. The visible art measures 15 3/4" L x 10 3/4" W, while the entire piece measures 27 3/4" L x 22 1/4" W x 1 3/8" D. The piece weighs approximately 8 lb, 10oz.*
