This is a rare Margot de Taxco, Margot Van Voorhies Carr Taxco, Mexico sterling silver and cloisonne enamel snake necklace dating to the circa 1948-1950’s. The necklace exhibits the shape of a rattle snake (rattlesnake). This is an iconic design with articulated serpent design with the head and rattle overlapping at the bottom. The piece is stamped, “TF-32 MEXICO 925”. This is an increasingly rare original Margot Van Voorhies Carr Taxco, Mexico sterling silver necklace from the circa 1950’s. The Margot De Taxco Sterling silver piece shows the iconic sterling silver and enameled articulated snake design in the ever so desirable stylings and hand crafted high-quality known by this renowned silversmith. Margot Van Voorhies was born in 1896 in San Francisco, California. She made her way to Mexico in 1937 and married Don Antonio Castillo. She went on to open her own shop in 1948 taking the name Margot de Taxco, in this time she birthed the enamelworks jewelry design in Mexico. Her shop employed Miguel Arias, Hilario Lopez, Miguel Melendez, Melicio Rodriguez (Melecio Rodriguez), Sigi Pineda, and Jaime Quiroz. Her talent and fame attracted Hollywood stars such as John Wayne and Lana Turner. Her shop had a fire in 1960 forcing her to move and later causing the shop to fold in 1974, later Margot passed in 1985. Her enamelwork is highly collectible with one example selling at Heritage auction in 2014 for $5,312.50. The snakeform (snake form) necklace measures approximately 18”L when clasp is closed (worn). Total weight of 128.5 grams.
