For your consideration is this 1848 Political Correspondence from John M. Niles, former United States Postmaster General appointed by then President Martin Van Buren in 1840. John M. Niles was a close political ally and personal friend of Martin Van Buren, serving as a key figure in the Democratic and Free Soil movements and became the party's candidate for Governor of Connecticut in 1849. Their professional and personal connection is documented in their preserved letters, where they discussed political strategy and party developments. During the presidential election campaign of 1848, the Free Soil Party, also called the Free Democratic Party or the Free Democracy, was a political party in the U. S. that split from the Democrat Party over their support of expanding slavery into the western territories of the United States. The new Free Soil Party was made up of anti-slavery Democrats, Whig Party members and Liberty Party members, and Martin Van Buren was their presidential candidate. This election marked the first time a third party significantly impacted a U.S. presidential race. rThe lettes is in amazingly well preserved condition, age tanning consistent with handling and age, some staining noted, in a clear protective sleeve. Sleeve measure 9.25"W x 11.25"L, weight U6.
