Featured in this lot are seven limited edition prints of original paintings done by Max Hillyard titled, "White Mountain Apaches". Max was born on March 13, 1930, in Lakin, Kansas. During the Korean War, he served in the Air Force. Max served as the art director for the Arizona Daily Star/Citizen and KGUN-TV in Tucson. He was a technical artist rendering missile systems and satellite surveillance apparatus for a U.S. defense contractor. He started working as a full-time freelance illustrator and artist after relocating his family to the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in 1977, where his wife was the elementary school's principal. He created the White Mountain Apache Tribe's Great Seal and the paintings that are still displayed in the Whiteriver Hospital. Max Hillyard, of Oak Creek Valley, Arizona, passed away at his home, Sunday, November 3, 2002. The series is a limited edition printing with this one being numbered 515 out of 1500. The portfolio features a cover page giving the titles of the prints and explanations of each. The prints include the following: Chief Alchesay, Pitching A Tus, Apache Medicine Man, Punished Weaver, A-100 and Apache Cradle Board. All the prints show the artist's signature reading, "Hillyard". The prints come in the original orange folder and reads, "A Portfolio of White Mountain Apaches by Max Hillyard / Limited Edition No 514 of 1500" in black lettering. The prints show good condition overall with no signs of wear or damage. The folder shows wear on the edges from its age and use over the years. The prints measure 14" L x 11" W.
