This is an original oil painting by Michael Coleman of a Native American Indian Tipi encampment on the shores of a Mountain River at sunset. The original oil painting is truly stunning, showing the Rocky Mountains in rich detail and draped in the robust color of the sunset which balanced by the quite Indian Encampment showing several tipi’s (also known as tepee, teepee, or lodge) and Indian ponies at the foot of a river. Signed lower left with his traditional stylized “Michael Coleman” signature and in the original gallery golden gilt wood frame. Michael Coleman (1946- ) was born and raised in Provo, Utah and spent his boyhood hunting, fishing and trapping throughout the Rocky Mountains, often taking a sketchbook with him. After studying art at Brigham young University and travling broadly, Coleman quickly became a prominent Southwestern artist when in 1978, at the age of 32, he was given his first retrospective at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. He also exhibited at the National Academy of Western Art, Kennedy Galleries in New York, in 1999 won the Prix de West Award at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame (for his bronze of a moose titled “September”) among other high honors and collections such as The White House, Washington, D.C., National Museum of Dubai, Charlie Russell Museum, Great Falls, Montana and more. His work is primarily in oil on board taking great influence by many key early 19th century masters of the Hudson River School such as: Henry Farny, Thomas Moran and George Inness, as well as Carl Rungius. None specifically for his Indian encampments, wildlife and hunting subjects his works can be found in private and public collections of such notable individuals as Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Oam Cumming, President George Bush, Sr., Vice-President Cheney, the Corning Museum, the National Wildlife Art Museum, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Canadian Embassy and more. The painting was collected from the artist / gallery directly and has been in a single-private collection ever since, purchased for around $15,000 many years ago. The painting and frame are well kept with no apparent damage, overall good condition. The beautifully framed piece measures 33-inches by 21-inches, artwork is 24-inches by 12-inches.
