The lot features an exceptional and rare Inlaid and carved Calumet “Peace” Pipe in Chief’s Grade from the Ojibwe of Minnesota with twisted rattlesnake effigy stem. The masterful piece is truly a stunning piece of American Inian art, expertly carved from black Minnesota pipestone and elaborately inlaid with silver pewter. The stem is a hand-carved piece of art in and of itself, showing a rattlesnake / snake effigy carved in high relief that is wrap itself around the stem, making this a twisted stem. The stem shows fine detail with dimensional carving and long smoking and pipe stems with nice dark coloring. The snake head shows inlaid glass eyes and the end shows the detail of the rattle. The stem has nice patina. The pipe is very well preserved for its early mid-1800’s age showing only minor scratches and nicks with no major damages or repairs. Provenance: From the Ojibwe of Minnesota collected in the mid-1900’s from the ex-collection of Ted Levy Santa Rosa, California and Mike Kokin Sherwoods Spirit of America Santa Fe, NM. The bowl measures 3-inches by 4.25-inches. The stem is 20.5-inches long.
