This is an outstanding circa Mid-19th Century beaded Buffalo hide from the Sioux Native American Indians of the Plains. Also referred to as a possible, possibles or tipi bag (tepee, teepee, or lodge). The bag is comprised of Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide that is sinew sewn and shows classic geometric beadwork, patterns documented on other 1860-1870s Sioux possible bags. The beadwork is all sinew sewn and shows period correct early glass trade seed beads in colors of greasy yellow, red white heart, black, cobalt, dark blue and chalk white. The bag also shows several rolled tin jingle dangle cones with red mineral dyed horse tail hair drop fringes. The bag has several later repairs done in both sinew and thread, but the original construction appears to be exclusively sinew sewn. The bag shows slightly stiffened hide with some suppleness, some slight cracking on the top, some very slight bead loss, but overall a well kept bag given its very early age. Provenance: From a private Native American collection in Royal Oaks, California. For reference see the Sioux C. 1860-1870 Possible Bag which sold at Santa Fe Art Auction in 2020 for $11,070 (w/ bp) and the Sioux Possible Bag from the Gustav Sigel collection which sold in 2018 by Cowan's for $5,842.50 (w/ bp). Measures overall 24"W x 17"H.*
