The lot features a mid-19th century cap and ball black powder octagon rifle attributed to Leman (Henry H. Leman Lancaster, Pennsylvania) with brass tacking and stamped. The rifle exhibits hand cut rifling with an 21.75-inch long octagon barrel . The rifle has a side hammer cap and ball action with double set trigger, brass patch box with faint W F stamping and brass butt plate. The stock has been repaired with thin wire wrappings, an old repair with the old cracks in the stocks still present. The stock is decorated with brass and metal tacking in a Southern Plains style. The left side of the stock is stamped, “WELLS FARGO 1858” at the center and “ARIZONA TERRITORY” on the stock. The side plate / receiver plate has been cleaned and any markings are not able to be determined. The rifle forestock was shortened and the rifle overall was shortened, a common practice on Indian traded rifles. The fore stock shows a poured pewter cap as well, another early repair. The rifle displays well and is an interesting piece. The side plate is consistent with other Leman examples but any markings have bene lost to history. The stampings in the wood a later addition, with exact age of when they were stamped unknown. Overall measures 37-inches long.
