This is an original circa 1840-1860’s catlinite pipestone pipe bowl from the Eastern Plains Native American Indians from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The piece is carved from solid catlinite pipestone showing a rich deep red to speckled pink coloring having a classic Eastern Plains / Great Lakes region pattern with “T” pipe having a large keel or fin running down the back. The keel has a ridged spine with zig-zag or mountain etched design on one side. The pipe bowl stem has a tampered finish with tapering foot and classic flaring round pipe bowl. The bottom of the pipe is cut flat. Both the bowl and stem connection shows nice signs of use and the entire bowl has a dark original patina from honest age and use. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Measures 5 1/8”L by 2.75”H by 1 5/8”W.
