Featured in this lot is this large Tunisian Zerhivas / Zarbeeya Wool Rug, circa mid-20th century. Pile rugs known as "zerhivas" or "zarbeeyas", consist of a central motif bordered by an arabesque pattern. Most of these rugs follow traditional designs and motifs and are much longer to weave. They are found throughout Tunisia but are most common in Kairouan, Tunisia. Kairouan has been known for its silk, cotton and linen fabrics since the 8th century. Pile carpets in Kairouan are decendents of Anatolian imports in the 17th and 18th centuries, and such rugs were first made in Kairouan in the 18th century. From the 17th century, Tripolitanian Berbers migrated to Tunisia, bringing with them more complex and fine geometries. The “mergoum” technique was adapted to Kairouan carpets. The rug utilizes colours of brown, red, and black against a cream coloured background. Geometric designs are featured on the borders. A beautiful rug with fringe on each long end, nice condition and shows little wear and use. The rug measures 114" wide by 150.5" long.
