Featured in this lot is this original oil on canvas painting done by Mildred Compton (1912-1976) titled, "Northern California Seascape" circa 1940. Mildred Norris Compton (1912-1976) was born in Vernon, Illinois, but is best known for her work in Georgetown, Austin, and Denton, Texas. She earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from North Texas State University in Denton. After marrying Carl Benton Compton in Richmond, Indiana in 1935, they resided in Georgetown from 1936 until 1943, where she wrote about art for the "Austin American-Statesman". They resided in Denton beginning in 1944, and she worked as a high school counselor for nineteen years. She died in 1976 and was buried in Denton, Texas. Her work was featured in the Annual Southeast Texas Artists Exhibition, Houston, 1937; National Exhibition of American Art, Rockefeller Center, New York, 1938; Texas-Oklahoma General Exhibition, 1941; Texas General Exhibition, 1941-42, 1945, 1947; Hock Shop Collection: Rediscovering Texas Artists of the Past, Center for the Visual Arts, Denton, 1998. The painting shows a beautiful seascape scene with waves crashing onto the brown, rocky shores. The background shows blue skies filled with light, fluffy clouds and whitecaps on the ocean's surface in the distance. The painting shows great attention to detail and gives a photo realistic look, especially in the water. It is signed in the bottom left hand corner in white paint reading, "M. Compton". On the back of the frame is a small, metal plaque reading, "Mildred Compton, b. 1912- d. 1976, Kentfield, CA / Northern California Seascape, c. 1940 / ref: Hughes, oil ref: Davenport, Hughes". The piece is not framed but shows good condition overall with slight wear present from its age and handling over the years, but no signs of major damage or wear is noted. The piece measures 18" L x 24" W x 3/4" D and weighs 1 pound and 4 ounces.
