Featured in this lot is a Rare Antique Moroccan Ait Zemmour Wool Saddle Bags, circa early to mid 1900s. The saddle bags feature complex and bold geometric patterns arranged in horizontal bands of red hues, purple and yellow, embellished with sequins and tassels. Ait Zemmour wool saddle bags are traditional, highly decorative, flat-woven textiles created by the Amazigh (Berber) people of the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco. Berbers are the indigenous ethnic group of North Africa. They are continuously distributed from the Atlantic to the Siwa oasis in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger River. The name Berber appeared for the first time after the end of the Roman Empire. Known for their dense, intricate geometric patterns and vibrant red color palette, they are often embellished with sequins and tassels, serving as both utilitarian objects and expressions of a weaver's skill. Primarily woven from local sheep's wool. Historically used by semi-nomadic people for transporting goods on horses and mules. They were designed to be "show pieces" of the women's artistry and were often carried over the shoulders in the souk (market). These saddle bags are in good overall condition, wear consistent with age and use. Measures 15.5"W x 21"L from hem to strap. Weight is 2lb, 4oz.
