Early flintlock pocket or “muff pistol” with antique ivory handle and light engraving c.1770-1830. This type of pistol was very popular in England, the European Continent and in early America during this turbulent and often lawless time. Often carried in pairs, they afforded travelers and pedestrians at least some form of protection from bandits and road agents. This example is unusual in that it has an ivory handle that has mellowed and “creamed” with age. The right upper edge is chipped with the balance in fine condition (modern liquid polymer could be made to match the ivory for a fairly easy fix). Metal surfaces are an attractive uncleaned deep patina. There are several proof marks on the bottom of the barrel which may prove to be English proofs of the period. There is a partially legible makers name on the left side of the breech below the hammer and light engraving on the bottom of the trigger guard and right side of the frame. The mechanism still works with the hammer securing the flint holding full cock and being released by the trigger. This is a .45 caliber pistol with a barrel length of approximately 3 ½” and an overall length of 7 1/2 inches. It is very usual to find an example such as this with an ivory handle. It is also unusual to find one that is still functioning. A most attractive 200+ year old handgun from the flintlock period. No Serial Number. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
