Featured in this lot is a Signed Mughal Persian Miniature Court Scene Gouache Painting, circa 15th-16th century, framed. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan, Indian, Mughal, Persian and Far East Asian art and artifacts. Persian miniature painting is a courtly and aristocratic art, with exquisite colors, balanced compositions, and meticulous attention to detail. A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western Medieval and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Throughout its history, Persian miniature painting has had a close affinity with the royal courts and its progression and development had a close connection to the royal patronage and the degree to which the rulers and their regional governors supported and encouraged the artists. Miniature painting became a significant Persian genre in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. This Mughal Persian Miniature Gouache painting is depicting a Royal court scene in bold colors and with fine details in the foreground. In the near background are seen tents, horses, and people while in the far background appear stone the leftover aqueducts from Roman governance. This gold gilt wood framed shadow box-style matted painting is in nice condition, the various colours vibrant as would be typical of Indo-Persian miniature paintings. Visible art measures 4.25"W x 7"L, frame is 11.75"W x 13.5"L x 1.5"D, weight is 2lb, 6oz.
