For your consideration is this vintage, wood carved Hopi Masau Kachina doll made by Hopi member Nelson Kuwanvama. Masau Kachina, also known as Earth God, controls the Earth and the Underworld. He is also known as the god of death. He controls the dead moving into the Underworld, and the Kachinas emergence into the world through the kivas (ceremonial room). Masau only travels at night, by firelight. His face represents a skull and the spots on his head represent clouds. This Kachina features black, red, white, blue, orange, brown and green colors throughout the piece. It has colored spots on its head, arms, and legs and is holding a red and black bowl. The Kachina has wood sticks coming from the back of its head and is wearing a small blanket with a fox pelt underneath it in the back. The Kachina stands on a wood platform, with the artist's name written in sharpie on the bottom reading, "Nelson Kuwanvama". This Kachina is dated around 1980-1990. The Kachina shows very good condition with no signs of obvious damage. The colors are still vivid and show no signs of fading. The Kachina measures 15" in height and 4 1/8" wide.
