Featured in this lot is this Navajo second phase child's Chief's Blanket rug circa 1870's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a third phase Chief's Blanket decoration that shows a banded design with coloration of light red with a blue border and a off white field. This tightly woven rug features geometric patterns to the edges of the rug that shows a stepped diamond design. The second phase Navajo chief’s blankets are the next transition in Navajo aesthetics. These blankets will bring somewhere between $125,000 to $250,000. Second Phase Blankets are also very rare but more common in comparison to the First Phase Blankets. The thread count is 325 threads per square inch. The condition of this rug is god with no some wear spots throughout the rug due to age and wear but otherwise shows good overall condition considering their age. The measurements of this rug are 50" x 30". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.
