Offered for auction in this lot is a Navajo Native American Indian, third phase concho belt. The third phase concho belt came about in the early 1900's, when artists learned how to set turquoise into their pieces. The use of turquoise in silver did not become prevalent until the 1890s, due to the scarcity of the stone. It was during this time period that the Colorado and Nevada turquoise mines began to export their turquoise to New Mexico and Arizona. This particular example shows the buckle, five chonchos, and six butterfly conchos. Each stamped with intricate Navajo design elements, and each concho displaying a gorgeous gem quality cabochon of sleeping beauty turquoise. Each concho is firmly secured the the leather belt with brass copper loops. The concho belt originates from the early 1900's, around the 1st quarter of the century. Overall, the belt shows good condition, with tightly set turquoise stones, and a warm silver patina - indicative of age. The belt measures 43" long. Each large concho measures 2 3/4" wide, and 2 1/4" tall.
