Offered in this lot is a Navajo Abel Toledo Sterling Silver Kokopelli Ring. This ring features a wonderfully and professionally crafted sterling silver construction, with a professionally tooled Kokopelli design. Kokopelli is a fertility god and mischievous spirit from the ancient lore of Native American tribes in the American Southwest, often depicted as a humpbacked flute player. His meaning includes ensuring fertility for crops and humans, bringing joy and music, and acting as a trickster or a traveler. His flute is said to bring the warmth of spring, while his hump carries seeds or other gifts to be shared. Kokopelli is not Navajo; the name and figure originate from the Hopi and are important to various Pueblo and Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) cultures. While the Navajo have a similar figure called To' Neinilii (Water Sprinkler) and have adopted Kokopelli as a common symbol, his origin is not Navajo. Navajo elders clarify that while Kokopelli is significant to the region, the common interpretations of him as a "fertility god" are not from their traditions. This impressive ring is in good overall condition, rich patina noted throughout. Artist's hallmark, "A T" and "STERLING" are stamped on the inside of the shank. Size 10, measures .875"W x 1"L x 1"D, weight is 14.7 grams.
