Featured in this lot is a Navajo black Yei Be Chei trading post rug, circa 1970s. The rug has a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool and naturally dyed construction. The rug features a very unique black field that shows white Yei figures with a corn stock in the center and a rainbow decoration around the right and left sides and bottom of the rug. It also includes a traditional design of four Yei figures. The Yei Be Chei dancers are the human impersonators who perform the ceremonies. The Yei Be Chei weavings present the dancers as they dance, perform, and enact the ceremony of the Yeis. Ceremonies are performed to either attract or exorcise effects to The People. Yei is the Navajo name for a deity or a holy one. The Yeis are woven facing outward. They are usually depicted with long bodies and skirts and hold sacred plants or symbols. The overall condition of this Navajo rug is good with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this rug are 48"L x 42 1/2"W. The thread count is 240 threads per square inch.*
