Featured in this lot is this Navajo Chinle Trading Post Pattern Wool Rug, circa mid-century. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction with bands of brown, cream, and rose between cream and grey strip bands. Stepped designs of rose and cream sit against a background of steel grey panels. Bands of mustard yellow flow horizontally. Borders have silver sage and pink as well as olive and pink. The Chinle style was developed by Mary Cabot Wheelwright and Cozy McSparron, a trader at Chinle. They sought to revive weaving using classic period designs with vegetal dyes. Chinle rugs are known for their striped bands of geometric patterns and contrasting colors. These new regional styles were all inspired by Navajo Transitional Period designs, which typically featured striped motifs and vegetal dyes.
This rug is good overall condition, seams and tassels are tight and well secured. Measures 30.5"W x 45.5"L, weight is 2lb, 2oz.
