Entirely hand-made, the headdress features a wonderfully and professionally crafted trade cloth construction featuring Turkey feathers, marabou feathers, horsehair, coyote fur, and leather. Buffy Sam is a contemporary Navajo Diné artist known for handcrafting Native American headdresses and war bonnets. Sam's headdresses are typically designed for ceremonial use or meaningful home display. Traditionally, each feather in a war bonnet is earned through acts of bravery or leadership. While Buffy Sam is Navajo, the "war bonnet" style is traditionally associated with Plains Indian Tribes like the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Crow.
