The lot features a rare Fort Wingate Gallup, New Mexico wool trade rug or saddle blanket from a Navajo Native American Indian dating to circa early 1900. Between circa 1900-1953 young girls were taught weaving at Fort Wingate with this piece having the original stamped Fort Wingate tag in the corner. The rug shows an Eye Dazzler saddle blanket pattern in all hand dyed natural colors in all wool of colors of black / brown, cream / white, and yellows. The piece shows some loss to the weave and fraying, typical of well used blankets of such an early age. Fort Wingate is near Gallup, New Mexico and was formally named Fort Lyon established in 1868 on Navajo territory and was later closed in 1993. The piece measures overall 30"x54".
