Featured in this lot is this original painting done by renowned Navajo artist, Franklin Kahn (1934-2010) in 1977. Kahn was born on May 25, 1934, into the Bit'ahnii Dinéé and Tsén'iikiní Yááshchíín nt'éé' clans. His parents were Jack and Alta Kahn, and he grew up in the Pine Springs, Oak Springs, and Klagetoh villages. He was born into a family of renowned silversmiths and rug weavers, which included early Navajo silversmith Tom Burnsides and weaver Mabel Burnsides Meyer. Kahn's artistic career began as a boy, when he and his brother Chester Kahn would draw on the rocks near the Pine Springs grazing regions where they tended their mother's sheep. Kahn began his official education in a four-year boarding school at Shiprock, New Mexico and continued his studies at the Stewart Indian School in Carson City, Nevada, from 1949 to 1953. Kahn then went on to study fine arts at the University of Nevada. In his last years, Kahn worked at the STAR School where he enjoyed teaching Navajo culture and science. Kahn's work has been displayed at the University of Nebraska, the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas, and the Museum of Northern Arizona. One of his works is in the book "Southwest Indian Painting". As a businessman, Kahn was instrumental in establishing the Flagstaff Pow-wow and Native Americans for Community Action (NACA). This painting shows a Native American man in traditional clothing wearing a large, bone hairpipe necklace. He wears a headdress with two feathers sticking out from the top as he looks towards the viewer. Colors of yellow, red, blue, purple, white, teal and gray can been scene in his clothes. It is signed in the bottom just underneath the man in blue paint reading, "FK '77". The piece is matted once with black matting paper and set in a gray colored frame. The piece shows good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of major damage noted. The visible art measures 9 3/8" L x 7 3/8" W, while the entire piece measures 15 3/8" L x 11 7/8" W x 7/8" D. It has a total weight of 1 pound and 12 ounces.
