This is an excellent authentic original Navajo Native American Indian Ganado pattern wool rug with a rare large size from the renowned Hubbell Trading Post dating to circa 1920-1930’s. The Ganado style of weaving was established by Lorenzo Hubbell in the late 19th Century and was from Ganado, Arizona. The rug exemplified the rich “Ganado Red” coloring and was accented by strong central diamond and triangle symbols along with hook patterns, simple diagonals, clouds and stair designs. Noted weavers included Sadie Curtis, Ruby Hubbard, Sarah Tisi and Elverna Vanwinkle. The rug shows immense craftsmanship with an intricate pattern showing all-natural aniline dyes with a soft hand spun churro wool. The piece shows a heathered grey / gray background with four large diamond patterns with alternating heathered brown and tan / cream having a stepped red and black hooked border and black and red stepped center being surrounded by eight overlapping intertwined diamonds of tan / cream, brown and black along with a center diamond pattern in cream with a stepped hook border black. The rug shows a four-layer border being hooked and stepped in black, tan / cream, and red. The piece shows some slight loss to the weave with some worn frayed spots but is in a very large full size and an exceptional early age. Other rugs with a similar high quality and age as this are often priced between $15,000-$20,000. The rug measures overall 88" x 56".
