Featured in this lot is this Navajo Ganado Klagetoh Trading Post rug circa 1930's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a classic Ganado style with a central arrangement in a Kagetoh decoration with stepped geometric patterns that make up the larger medallion. The rug shows Lazy Lines throughout with a heathered grey and beige field with dark brown and red coloration. Located southwest of Crystal in the geographical center of the Navajo Reservation the Ganado style of weaving was established by Lorenzo Hubbell in late 1800. The motif generally consists of one or more stepped diamonds or stepped and embellished triangles. The colors are usually dominated by a red background with gray, ivory, black and red designs surrounded by a geometric border. Klagetoh is located just south of Ganado and 10 miles north of Wide Ruins. The English translation is “hidden springs”. The Klagetoh weaving is very similar to the Ganado rugs, but with a predominantly gray background instead of the Ganado’s red. Some experts do not consider Klagetoh a specific regional rug but a sub-type of Ganado. The condition of this Navajo rug is well preserved with a couple small fraying holes in the rug and to the rim of the rug and shows a significant dirtying of one end of the rug but otherwise is well preserved. The measurements of this rug is 63" x 41". The thread count of this rug is 136 threads per square inch.
