The scene is of four horseback Indians hunting a buffalo herd led by a White buffalo. The White Buffalo legend originates from the sacred story of the White Buffalo Calf Woman (Ptesá?wi?) among the Lakota and other Plains Indian tribes. It symbolizes hope, abundance, peace, and the promise of renewal. Her legend teaches that humanity must live in harmony with the Earth and all living things. Among the Sioux, Cherokee, and Mandan tribes, the rare white buffalo (occurring naturally in roughly 1 out of 10 million births) is considered the most sacred living thing. Robert Becenti was a (1949-2001) famous Navajo artist from Crown Point, New Mexico, known for, bringing the every day Navajo scenes to life. Born in Rehoboth, NM area of the Navajo Reservation, his mother, Bessie Becenti, was a well known weaver. Becenti was a realist and painting in the style of Jimmy Abeita. During the 1970's through the early 1980's, he was a regular award winner at the Gallup Inter-tribal Ceremonial. Becenti worked with the former Kiva Gallery in Gallup owned by the legendary Nell Guadagnoli. Guadagnoli promoted many Native artists and was for years the main source of Becenti paintings. The artist was also an accomplished silversmith and spent much of his time creating jewelry.
