Featured in this lot is this Navajo single Yei Bei Chei silversmith rug circa 1890-1900. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a off white field with a Native American silversmith in its center and Valero stars on both sides of the figure along with arrows and bows on either side as well. The man is wearing turquoise earrings and a turquoise squash blossom necklace with a concho belt that has a bag hanging from it. The colors on the figure include red, orange, and dark brown. The way this rug was made is from the bottom up and they ran out of space for the mans hat so they wove it in next to his head. The rug shows a orange spirit line shown at the top corner of the rug. The Yei Navajo rugs begin in the Northwest corner of the reservation, in the early part of the 20 century Developed by Will Evans Trader and owner of the Shiprock trading Company. Yei are religious deities taken from the Navajo Sand paintings. But these weavings do not have any religious significance. In these weavings the male Yei have round heads & the female Yei have square heads. Usually the these weaving have a stylized rainbow down the sides and across the bottom and no border. The condition of Navajo rug is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this rug are 28 1/2" x 22". The thread count of this rug is 90 threads per square inch.
